The wizard also makes it easy to add additional wireless devices. Return Policy. Perfect for your mom, does remote management very well. (logged into it right now) GUI is pretty good. The unit is just not anywhere near power user stuff. The Ethernet plugs rust, are hokey, and are kind of on the lame side. Mine no longer holds lan cables anymore. This is the router you give to your mom who uses AOL. Or Clear as the ISP.That way, you never have to reset it. It is a glorified AP.But it works just well enough to just be plug and play. And that;s about all its good for. WEP does not even work well, works best as just an AP or if you need another cheap switch to hook up extra computers in the kids room.I have a total of 4 devices connecting via wireless, I connected up my laptop and everything was great had an excellent signal strength. Happy. Then I connected my other laptop, once it connected, my first laptop stopped working, waited five minutes and both started working with no troubleshooting. Then I connect my phone, phone works laptops died. Not so happy. Now I am dealing with having to statically assign my laptop an IP and DNS server just to have Internet for 12 minutes and then nothing until I restart my browser.Mac's are not the most compatible computers on the market in general, I am just furious that I had to deal with this. Technology happens I guess. It was simple to setup although I prefer the older dlink's setup screen. But, I'm biased i had the other dlink for nearly 2 years. The wireless transmitter works well. I live on the 14th floor in NYC and I can pick up the signal on the 1st floor across the street. What his says is totally correct. I just revert back to version 2.0.

During the router installation, you will be provided with the default username and password. It is recommended to change the default credentials. Changing the username and password can be done by just doing the simple steps of how to set DLink password. Before you start to change the password, note your D-Link router’s IP address. Remember to assign a strong password with alphanumeric characters so that you can avoid network insecurity. You can launch the D-Link setup page to set a new password. You can also login to your D-Link account to change the network password. Leave the password field empty. It is recommended to change the initial settings on your router with how to set DLink password. To change the admin password on your D-Link router, you can launch the D-Link router’s setup page or go to. On your computer or smartphone, start an internet browser. Go to the D-Link router’s manufacturer’s site and enter the IP Address. If you do not know the IP Address, click the Start menu on your computer. Type CMD in the search box and select Command Prompt. A new dialog box will appear on the screen. Enter ipconfig and tap the Enter key.

Then u go in admin 2 set up ur specific things. Not this one. Didn't work. Ended up having 2 run the wizard. I have to power cycle it a many times a week vs. Afterward the icon said connected but I couldn't connect to the web. I was SO MAD I was about to put a hammer to this junk. (see below, I'm running out of the 1000 characters message length limit here.)It worked but I had a feeling that I was just plain lucky. I'm sure others had got messed up by the firmware upgrade. Other minor things like it runs soooo hot you can cook an egg on it. Both the WAN and the Local Network Status lights keep flashing all the time when they are supposed to only flash during data transmission. Heck, the WAN light flashes when no computer is connected via wire or wifi. This is my 1st and will be my last piece of equipment from D-Link. It's a router not space shuttle. If D-Link can't make a simple device, I am sure they can't make anything else. May be I get a bad piece out of the batch but don't think so seeing all the other negative reviews here. Thanks 4 the aggravation, D-LinkWorks with various brands of wi-fi cars without any problems. Worked great and saw very little latency in games.Usually myself (cabled) and my brother (wireless) saw less than 100 ping on most U.S. servers. After initial problem with the router deciding to reboot on it's own, I updated to the latest firmware. The latest firmware made it worse, and it would freeze under heavy traffic, with all the lights blinking, requiring unplugging the power cord and plugging it back in to get it to work again. I went to another firmware that was slightly newer than the firmware that came with it, and that fixed the punting.I've seen my ping in video games now reach over 400, with two cabled users.Even juggling cabled and wireless users it ran video games great, but ever since the punting initially began, I've had nothing but problems with it.

I bought this at F-r-y's nearly 6 months ago so it is too late to return now, however I will call D-Link and see what they can do. Hopefully replace it with a unit that can keep ping under control. Also, I by-passed the router and went back to the modem to make sure Cox wasn't the problem.Click here for more details. One would think that if they can make a Cable Modem that is not effected by lightening spikes they could have made this Router just as resistant. This is the third replacement, and since they are being used up, probably the last.It arrived in only 3 days. The router was very easy to install using its web GUI and setup wizard. It also includes a firewall and now I can block ping requests coming in from the WAN interface whereas my Westell DSL modem couldn't do that. 0 out of 5 stars The router provides fast networking between the two machines, I have transferred a 600 MB file in under 2 minutes on our local network. I had a small problem with the install that was fixed by installing the newest firmware. Follow this advice in the instructions and do this step first. I get both fast upload and downloads without any problems. I like the light weight aspect because the router is hanging in mid-air between the printer and monitor. The mid-air positioning may be preventing some of the other errors that have been reported due to overheating. I have been using the router since mid-Decemember and have not experienced overheating or slow downs in data transfer. I had one problem when the setup software in the internet explorer would display the main screen but no links. I fixed this problem without resetting the router, but unplugging it from its power supply. PeteIts excellent instruction manual walked us through the installation process in minutes, with appropriate lighted indicators on the router itself letting us know where we stood each step of the way. Our home network is now up to three PCs, all of which work well through the DLink device. We would highly recommend this router for its effectiveness, simplicity, and value !Eventually, I liked it so much that I bought another one at my local electronics store. This product totally exceeded my original expectations. I thought it was just a vanilla router - it was certainly cheaper than a lot of others. However, this baby is VERY configurable. It's also a must if you're running an internet or ftp server. It allows you to have some computers be accessible to the outside while keeping your other computers safe with its firewall software. This is also great for online gaming as router firewalls can sometimes be a problem. As a bonus, this baby has the software for connecting XBoxes if you want to have an Xbox lan party or use the XBox Live Software.

I haven't used this aspect of it, but it does mention that it's compatible. It provides excellent protection from Internet malware and hackers, since it has Network Address Translation (NAT) and Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI). The problem is that the latest one that I bought tends to need rebooting (totally cold start - power off) to get it to connect to my computers. Other than that, I have no problems with it, but that one problem causes me to lower the rating to two-stars. If not for that, I'd give it five stars. It's too bad that D-Link discontinued this model rather than just fixing the reboot problem.I have had several of their products in the past, and never had problems with them. But this router is junk. Nothing works right, and the web menu stops operating (and on-and-on). I had faith, so I kept trying to make things happen. But, after a very frustrating month, I gave up and got a TP-Link router (TL-R860) which worked perfectly right away, and was les expensive.I have cable service and those guys were charging me a large premium every month for my extra computers. This little box took care of that problem. The setup was amazingly simple. I think it took all of 1 minute to setup and I had all 3 of my computers browsing the internet. It will even clone your mac address so you provider can't tell its not your main computer. I love the web page interface used in setup as well. After I had it a little while, I went to the dlink webpage and found updated firmware. This had one confusing step (the fact that you don't extract the bin file, you must leave it as that despite what they say), but after i figured that out it went smoothly. It was nice that the router protected me from loading the wrongly encoded file (this would have really messed up the unit). It wouldn't let any intruders initiate contact with my system. Neato! My only complaint is that while this Router works very well, the things go south whenever lightening strikes two States away.

Depending on the requested service, the D-Link DIR-601 redirects the external service request to the appropriate server within the LAN network. There are pre-defined virtual services already in the table. You may use them by enabling them and assigning the server IP to use that particular virtual service. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness. See All Buying Options Add to Wish List Disabling it will result in some disabled or missing features. You can still see all customer reviews for the product. It just works like it's suppose to. It also actually out performs the last one I bought which had more bells and whistles than I thought was necessary. All I can say is it makes sense to pay more attention to the reviews than the ratings so I would keep that in mind when looking for a good router. I have windows 8.1. For some reason when I was going step by step, it couldn't load past a particular step (when I plugged in the power I think, it kept buffering), so I just set the whole thing up with out the instructions. I then restarted the disk in my computer, and it automatically forwarded me to the security setup. After that, everything worked as it should, and I was done. So happy with this router!:) UPDATE: Even though this router has a strong signal flowing through it most of the time, after having it for a few days, the signal would slowly degrade and drop. I was able to research how to tweak the settings in the router from the d-link website so this wouldn't happen anymore. So far so good. My attempts to install this router with a computer using Windows 7 and using the provided CD was an incredibly aggravating experience. It simply did not work. The setup failed at different points in the process, always ending with a referral to the support website or to call customer service. The support website probably had the information to complete installation, but there was no clue how to navigate to find exactly what I needed. So I phoned customer service. The first person I spoke to did not speak English.

He probably could read English, but his accent was so heavy that I could catch only about 1 word out of 5 so long as he was able to stay on his script. But off script, he just babbled incoherently. I asked to speak to another customer service agent and, as near as I could tell, he was not going to allow that. I dialed several more times, getting the message that all lines were busy and try again later. Eventually I did get through to a customer service agent whose English was understandable. She walked me through the manual setup process. She obviously was working off a script and could not deviate even slightly, which slowed the process, but by following her instructions it was completed. Total time wasted on the set up was about 2 hours. As I was packing up the CD and the Quick Install Guide I noticed that on the back of the guide were instructions for a manual setup to use 'if you are using Mac or Linux, or are unable to use the wizard...' I had made the mistake of believing that the Quick Router Setup Wizard would work with my Windows computer. When the setup wizard failed, why did it not suggest that I try a manual setup. Why did it not tell me that there was a manual setup alternative. Why did it only suggest the support web page or telephone the customer service agents. The hardware may be fine, but the documentation and aggravation of the customer service gets the product marked down to 3 stars. Please try again later. From the United StatesThis one is dependable. It just works like it's suppose to. So far so good. Please try again later. Please try again later. TED in OJAI 5.0 out of 5 stars On a Sunday morning we contacted D-Link customer support. Our glitches were all resolved through expert guidance from D-Link's support specialist Mae (AR004224.

) She is very savvy in her technical product knowledge and in about ten minutes was able to talk us through complete configuration of the router and establishing wi-fi connections to our Apple and Microsoft laptops at increased speed. Some of the D-Link DIR-601 setup literature was a bit off the mark and we missed some settings but Mae was able to quickly navigate us to a successful setup. Given the success with the D Link 601 we bought an additional one for my in laws in N Jersey. The 'wizard's software disk was not very helpful so we called Slink and spoke to Jun, a support specialist. He guided is over the hurdles for a manual setup. I'm less than ten minutes we were online. The router is working very well now (Case c6704451) Our success prompted me to purchase another D Link Sir 601Please try again later. Please try again later. DKT 4.0 out of 5 stars The problem areas were invariably poor range and difficult installation. The reviews on the DIR-601 were much better than most, which, combined with price, is why I chose it. I can confirm that the reviews are accurate. I do have some minor range issues, but fewer than those reported by some users of much more expensive routers. The router is in my home office in the BASEMENT of the house. If I take my Toshiba Win 7 laptop to any part of the house OUTSIDE the planes of the basement walls (the porch and the breakfast-room-extension off the kitchen), the signal strength can drop to as little as 2 out of 5 bars, and download speed can drop from 18-20Mbps to just under 4Mbps. But I'm pretty sure that NO router -- at any price -- would do significantly better if positioned in the same place. Everywhere INSIDE the planes of the basement walls -- even the bedrooms 2-stories up and farthest from the router -- I typically get 4-5 bars. There are times when it falls to 3 bars in one bedroom, but it's not consistently at that level, so the drop-off could be due to transient interference from other electronics (e.g.

, our three cordless phones or routers in homes near us). I'm virtually certain that I could improve the signal strength in the areas where it's low by positioning the router close to the basement ceiling and away from the walls. But doing that requires (a) a couple of very long Ethernet cables (impractical) or (b) a couple of power line Ethernet adapters (expensive) or (c) getting a repeater (also expensive). I had one issue that I called D-Link's tech support about. The call was answered immediately (no hold time), the technician (South Africa) was knowledgeable and resolved the issue during the call. Turns out Shields Up is measuring the status of the router, not my PC. This tech support experience was completely opposite to what I had been told about D-Link's support -- that it was slow and not very good. If I were rating their tech support, I'd give it 5 stars. If you're new to routers, be aware that this is NOT an N-300 router; it's an N-150 router. That means (my understanding) that the maximum bandwidth it can deliver is 150Mbps. Since no one in the house plays complex games or streams movies from the Internet, and there are currently only 2 computers using the cable connection, a 300Mbps router would be overkill for us. But if you have multiple (4-5) computers playing Internet games simultaneously, you should probably get an N-300 router. Please try again later. Please try again later. Joe 4.0 out of 5 stars Thats part of life and as I said, mostly the cable company, sometimes the modem, not the router. It was pretty plug and play to set up but there were a bunch of options. I am not the paranoid type who needs 64 passwords that autochange every 3.2 hours to prevent the govt spies and neighborhood cyberthugs from killing me and stealing my identity. I just dont want my neighbors stealing my inninet so Im cool with basic setup and 10 digit password. Im sure it has a paranoid setting too though.

I got this router about a year ago and its actually more expensive now than when I bought it. I feel like you could get a better router for maybe just a little more. By better, I mean one that has a shared printer or hard drive USB port. That would be useful. I know if you shop around you could get one for about the same price. If you just use your router for internet, then you will be first limited by the service provider (2-50 Mbps for MOST cable people). There are also limitations on the computer that may limit you to 20-40 Mbps. Those really expensive routers are only every going to realize 300 Mbps speed if used to their full potential (which they mostly arent) and those people who do use them already know they need them. So if you want to know which modem to buy, dont pay too much attention to speed unless you know you need it (in which case you aren't going to be reading reviews on amazon for an outdated base model router). Anyway, I think its an excellent base model N router and worth about 20 bucks. Please try again later. Please try again later. bsg2004 5.0 out of 5 stars I am using this with cable DSL service with the I have also used the Wifi option to connect to the internet with an iPod, Kindle and a basic Android tablet and they all connected without issues. The Speedtest app on the iPod showed around 15Mbps most of the times I ran it from about eight feet or so. I do not usually stream content from my computer to mobile devices, so I can't comment on how it performs in that fashion. Another plus, the AC power plug is slim and it can fit in one slot on an extension without eating space for the other ports. This is a nice touch, since some other AC adapters can hog 2-3 slots. It should go without saying, but I did put one of the cables in the wrong slot during the first installation attempt:) I used the CD wizard instructions to do the installation. The very last step, verifying the router configuration may take a few minutes.

    d-link router manual di-524

The DI-524 can be setup to deny internal computers by their IP or MAC addresses. The DI-524 can also block users from accessing restricted web sites. A URL is a specially formatted text string that defines a location on the Internet. If any part of the URL contains the blocked word, the site will not be accessible and the web page will not display. You can either manually add a MAC address or select the MAC address from the list of clients that are currently connected to the Broadband Router. Domain blocking will deny all requests to a specific domain such as http and ftp. It can also allow computers to access specific sites and deny all other sites. It works in the same way as IP Filters with additional settings. You can create more detailed access rules for the DI-524. When virtual services are created and enabled, it will also display in Firewall Rules. It allows a computer to be exposed to the Internet. This feature is useful for gaming purposes. There are two accounts that can access the Broadband Router’s Web-Management interface. They are admin and user. User can only view the settings but cannot make any changes. NTP is short for Network Time Protocol. NTP synchronizes com- puter clock times in a network of computers. This field is optional. The saved file or any other saved setting file can be loaded back on the Broadband Router. To reload a system settings file, click on Browse to browse the local hard drive and locate the system file to be used. Please check the D-Link support site for firmware updates at You can download firmware up- grades to your hard drive from the D-Link support site. Multiple VPN connections can be made through the DI-524. This is useful when you have many VPN clients on the LAN network. It will display the LAN, WAN, and MAC address information. If your WAN connection is set up for a Dynamic IP address then a Release button and a Renew button will be displayed. If the device is rebooted, the logs are automatically cleared.
